Awnings and patio roofs: getting shade right
A patio roof or awning can make an outdoor area usable through summer and on rainy days. The key is getting shade where you need it without making the rooms behind it gloomy.
Follow the sun
Watch where the sun falls at the times you'll actually use the space. A west-facing yard catches harsh afternoon sun and benefits most from solid cover. A north-facing area may only need partial shade, so you keep the warmth in winter.
Protect your natural light
A solid roof directly outside your living room can cut the light inside. Clear or translucent roofing panels near the house, a raised roofline, or a skillion that lifts away from the house all help keep rooms bright.
Plan for rain
A roof is only as good as its drainage. The fall of the roof, gutters and downpipes all need to send water away from the house and your neighbours. We work with a licensed roof plumber for roofing and flashing so this is done properly.
Make it feel part of the house
Matching the roof colour, beam sizes and trim details to your home is what separates a structure that looks added on from one that looks like it was always there.
