Carports: what to know before you build

A carport is often the first thing people see when they pull up to your home. Done well, it protects your car from sun, hail and bird droppings, and adds to your street appeal.

Size it for real life

Allow room to open doors fully, unload shopping and get a pram or kids out comfortably. If you have, or might buy, a larger vehicle such as a 4WD or a van, size for that now.

Attached or freestanding

An attached carport uses the house for support on one side and feels like part of the home. A freestanding carport gives more flexibility on placement. Both need solid footings and the right connections.

Roof style

Flat or skillion roofs are simple and modern. A gable roof often suits older homes and adds height and character. The roof style should match your house so it looks right from the street.

Approvals

Carports at the front of a property often have stricter rules than structures in the backyard, especially around setbacks from the street. It's worth checking early before you fall in love with a design.
