To tile or not to tile?
Tiles have been the default for wet areas for good reason. But with so many flooring and wall options now available, it's worth asking where tiles earn their place and where something else might suit better.
Where tiles shine
Bathrooms and showers: properly waterproofed and tiled, nothing beats them for wet areas.
Kitchen splashbacks: easy to wipe down and a great way to add colour or texture.
Outdoor and alfresco areas: the right outdoor-rated tile handles weather and foot traffic.
Where you might choose something else
Living areas: tiles can feel cold and hard underfoot. Hybrid or timber flooring is warmer and quieter.
Upstairs rooms: tiles add weight and noise. Lighter floors are often a better fit.
Tight budgets: tiling is labour-intensive, so large tiled areas add up quickly.
Think about the future
Tiles last for decades, which is great if you love them and frustrating if you don't. Choosing a simple, classic tile for big areas and saving bolder choices for a feature wall or splashback keeps your home from dating.
Whatever you choose, preparation and waterproofing are what make the finish last.
